Nicolas Cage Not Playing NYPD DetectiveAward-Winning Actor Does Not Buy Rights To 'Circle Of Six'

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK A book about the 1972 killing of a police officer inside a mosque attracted the attention of Nicolas Cage's production company, but the actor hasn't bought the rights to it and doesn't intend to, his publicist said Wednesday.

The publicist denied a published account from one of the authors of "Circle of Six" that Cage had bought the rights to play a New York Police Department detective in a film based on the book.

"Nicolas Cage's SATURN films was merely in the very early stages/talks of an exploratory process of the book," publicist Jen Turner said via e-mail. "Absolutely no purchase was made or will be made."

Retired Detective Randy Jurgensen and Robert Cea co-wrote "Circle of Six," published in 2006. Jurgensen was one of the investigators who looked into the killing of police Officer Philip Cardillo on April 14, 1972.

Cardillo was killed in a Harlem mosque that was led by the Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan. The killing is officially listed as unsolved.

In "Circle of Six," the authors allege that city and racial politics of the day hampered the investigation, even though Jurgensen argues in the book that he captured Cardillo's killer. An e-mail to Jurgensen from The Associated Press was not immediately answered Wednesday.

Cage recently played a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey sergeant in 2006's "World Trade Center" and is appearing in the soon-to-be-released film adaptation of the comic book "Ghost Rider."

Cage Buys Rights to Film About Slain NYPD Officer

NEW YORK -- Nicholas Cage has purchased the rights to play an NYPD detective for a film about the killing of a city police officer in 1972.

Cage played a Port Authority sergeant in last year's "World Trade Center'' and will soon be seen in the film version of the comic book "Ghost Rider.''

Cage bought the rights to play a lead role in the movie adaptation of the true-crime book "Circle of Six.'' The book was penned by retired Detective Randy Jurgensen and Robert Cea.

The book relates the story of the probe into the murder of Officer Phil Cardillo on April 14, 1972, inside a Harlem mosque.

"Circle of Six'' aimed to reveal how investigation into the killing was hampered by the politics of the day. Cardillo's murder remains unsolved.
