THE SKINNY: CBS’ quiet little hit JERICHO returns to the network on February 14 after a short winter hiatus and executive producer/director Jon Turteltaub has found his experience so thrilling that he’s stayed on the show for the long haul.
"I thought over the summer I would stay on JERICHO a little bit and then when NATIONAL TREASURE 2 started I would walk away," admits Turteltaub. "I haven’t able to walk away. I can’t. It’s too fun and I like the people too much, so I’m trying to split my time."
Work on the Walt Disney sequel will begin in March for a December release according to the director which works out great for his new TV schedule.
"I will mostly be shooting toward the end of hiatus, and I’ll be in editing when they start up again," says Turteltaub, which if you’re reading through the lines folks, means that there’s a solid chance for JERICHO to return for a second season.
As for NATIONAL TREASURE 2, Turteltaub says the entire cast will be back for the new movie including Nicolas Cage and teases at what to expect from the plot.
"It involves treasure that hooks into the conspirators who killed Lincoln and it ties it to that assassination," says Turteltaub, "We also bring a lot out from that era as well as ancient Native American treasure."
After directing two episodes for JERICHO, after years of directing big-budget studio films, Turteltaub admits he’s learned quite a bit from working in this new medium.
"[Basically] how to shoot faster and move quicker," he admits, but says he doesn’t expect those lessons to last long once NATIONAL TREASURE 2 begins.
"It will take me about an hour and I will be back into my old wasteful ways," he says with a laugh. "I’m used to having no money and no time with JERICHO so I will have to put that into practice."For iF’s full interview with Turteltaub about JERICHO check back in two weeks.
